Owings next up in fifth starter role for D-backs

PHOENIX – The Diamondbacks have named Micah Owings as their new fifth starter and he will get the start on Sunday against Colorado.

The team is hoping Owings will work out better than the previous fifth starters that Arizona has rolled out on the mound this season.

The team has gone through Armando Galarraga, Zach Duke and Barry Enright with none of them being able to produce consistent outings.

Owings has starter experience and has been an effective reliever for the D-backs this season as a set-up man, long man or spot starter.

He has a 3-0 record with a 2.76 ERA and has already made two starts when called upon this season.

Arizona is believed to looking to add a starting pitcher at the trade deadline, so it could be a short stay for Owings in the rotation.

If the team is unable to acquire a new starting pitcher, the organization could still decide to move Owings back to the bullpen and bring up one of their minor league pitchers like Wes Roemer or Wade Miley to give them a chance.

One thing is certain. Arizona’s offense could see a spike in production when Owings starts because he’s one of the best hitting pitchers in the game.
