ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

D-back fans shouldn’t worry about Marquis and Ziegler

Wednesday wasn’t exactly the type of debut Kevin Towers and the Arizona Diamondbacks hoped for from the newest members of their pitching staff. Jason Marquis and Brad Ziegler both struggled as they combined to give up seven earned runs.

That doesn’t concern Ron Wolfley. He told listeners of Doug and Wolf Wednesday morning that both pitchers probably suffered from some first game jitters.

“Maybe it was just a little bit of pressure trying to impress,” Wolf said. “Maybe you’re pressing because you’re trying to impress. You’re certainly trying to make an impression on your teammates. Maybe Marquis was was pressing a little bit. Maybe Brad Ziegler was pressing also. I’m not going to hold their feet to the fire.”

Just because they struggled out of the gates doesn’t mean it’s an indication of how they’ll fare the rest of the year.

“I will say this right now. I love the moves of bringing in Marquis and Ziegler,” Wolfley said. “For the record I’m behind that move 100-percent bringing those two guys in. I think they’re going to make the Diamondbacks better down the stretch. If in fact the D-backs are going to get into the post season those two will have something to do with it.”

Hopefully D-backs fans will be in love with the moves at some point this season as well. If Marquis and Ziegler return to form and play like they did with their previous clubs, they should provide the kind of boost Towers expected them too.
