Inside the Box for
August 14, 2011: Diamondbacks 5, Mets 3
The Good:
The D-backs needed a game to boost their hitters’ confidences before heading to Philadelphia and they got one on Sunday. They put together five runs in all.
Paul Goldschmidt and Justin Upton both had a big game. Goldschmidt had struck out five times in a row prior to a three-hit game, including two doubles, on Sunday. Upton’s two hits were solid, including his drive to deep left in the fifth inning.
The Bad:
The D-backs have only had starting pitcher Jason Marquis for about two weeks, but they have already lost him to injury. In the third inning, Marquis took a line drive to the ankle area, but got up and seemed to be fine. Things went bad in the fourth. After one out, Marquis hit Josh Tole and went down grasping his ankle. He had broken his right fibula and could miss the rest of the season.
The Funky:
With Sunday’s win, the D-backs now have the highest numbers of comeback wins in the majors with 34.
