How to get your face into the 2021 Waste Management Phoenix Open

There will be new faces in the crowd come February’s Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale.

That’s because the 2021 iteration of the tournament will feature a pared-down turnout. According to ESPN’s Bob Harig, the WMPO will be limited to up to 8,000 spectators per day.

Fans of the event can still have their faces displayed come February, however, as the event’s organizers, The Thunderbirds, are selling cardboard headshots, called the Faces on 16th Program, that will be placed on the par-3 16th hole during the tournament.

Tournament chairman Scott Jenkins described the move, which will cost as much as $500 per cutout, as a win-win in the tournament’s press release.

Jenkins said the proceeds from the cutout sales will go toward the tournament’s charities, while also keeping one of the sport’s most unique amphitheater settings intact during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Although the WM Phoenix Open footprint will look significantly different this year, we wanted to give our fans – the greatest fans in golf – another opportunity to be a part of the 2021 event if they are unable to attend,” Jenkins said in the press release. “The 16th hole at the WM Phoenix Open is one of most storied traditions in professional golf and it was important to The Thunderbirds to allow fans the chance to continue those traditions, albeit in a virtual manner, along with donating money to four great causes.”

The more expensive, $500 cutout option is referred to as “primary visibility,” with headshots placed around the tee box and green on the 16th hole.

There’s also a $250 secondary visibility option that includes having headshots placed on the south side of the hole, to the right of the golfer.

The 86th edition of the tournament will be held in Scottsdale from Feb. 1-7.
