Diamondbacks inquire about Edgar Renteria

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been down a shortstop since Stephen Drew was lost for the season with an injury.

The team would like to bring in a player who can share time with Willie Bloomquist at the position, and they appear to have their eyes set on one who would come with World Series experience.

According to Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro, the D-backs have talked to the Cincinnati Reds about Edgar Renteria.

Renteria, you may remember, was part of World Series champions in Florida and San Francisco.

As Gambadoro reports, “Arizona is looking to add depth & experience to the position for stretch run.”

Renteria would be just that.

Though he’s hitting just .245 this year in a part-time role, Renteria is a career .286 batter who hit .412 for the Giants last postseason and is still solid with the glove.

At 36 and with an expiring contract, Renteria would not be a long-term solution for the Diamondbacks. He would, however, be an outstanding fit in the short-term, and chances are the D-backs wouldn’t have to give up much to acquire the shortstop.
