The Guaranteed Rate Bowl game will not go on as planned.

The bowl game has been canceled after it couldn’t field teams for the contest, it announced Sunday afternoon.

The game, which usually takes place at Chase Field in Phoenix, was supposed to be a matchup between the Big 12 and Big Ten conferences.

“Due to unprecedented ramifications from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Guaranteed Rate Bowl has been forced to cancel its 2020 game, originally set for Dec. 26,” The bowl said on Twitter. “We were excited to host two quality institutions and stage a memorable experience for all involved.

“This is a disappointing result for out organization, community partners, sponsors, fans, staff and volunteers. A lot of thoguhtful work has gone into planning, adjusting and executing an event of this stature.”

The bowl game added it looks forward to hosting the Big Ten and Big 12 teams in downtown Phoenix for the 2021-22 bowl season.

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl has been played at Chase Field since 2016. It was also named the Cactus Bowl (2016-17) and Cheez-it Bowl (2018-19) over that span.
