After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
August 18, 2011: Phillies 4, Diamondbacks 1

The Good:

Paul Goldschmidt showed yet again why he was called up to the majors on Thursday night. His solo home run to deep center in the eighth inning proved to be the only spark shown by the D-backs offense. Goldschmidt also had a single in the third inning.

The Bad:

The D-backs were almost spared from a rare mediocre performance by starter Ian Kennedy by rain. Sadly, the rain lifted.

Prior to the rain delay, the D-backs looked to be on their way to being routed. They were down 3-0 in the third and Kennedy was not looking good, clearly showing uncharacteristic signs of frustration. And he may have had a right to be aggravated.

The D-backs were not their usual offensive-reliant selves in Philadelphia. Thursday’s three-hit performance capped a rather dismal trip to the City of Brotherly Love, where the team managed a total of 14 hits. Respectable maybe, until you consider they had eight in the first game of the series.

Hey, at least the avoided the sweep.

The Ugly:

Only two D-backs made a mark in the hit column on Thursday – Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero. They are two of the three D-backs to have a multi-hit game in the series. The other was Lyle Overbay.
