Former Arizona Wildcats quarterback Grant Gunnell is heading to play for coach Ryan Silverfield and the Memphis Tigers.

Gunnell, who threw for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns across two seasons in Tucson, entered the NCAA’s transfer portal on Dec. 17 after the Wildcats fired head coach Kevin Sumlin.

Gunnell confirmed his decision to Christian Fowler of GoTigers247, saying he felt comfortable running Silverfield’s offense.

“It felt like home and it felt like family to me when I was talking to the staff,” Gunnell told Fowler. “I don’t really care about anything but putting my head down and getting to work. Regardless of what happens, I’m going to work as hard as I can to make this team better.”

Gunnell told Fowler that the Tigers offense reminded him of what he ran in high school, with a fast-paced offense that allows the quarterback to make audibles and calls at the line of scrimmage.

“In high school, my coach gave me a lot of freedom, and he allowed me to make decisions at the line of scrimmage and make checks,” Gunnell said. “I’m ready to get back to that, and I’m ready to get back to pushing the ball down the field. I think Memphis’ offense is going to fit me better than Arizona’s did.”

The Tigers went 8-3 under Silverfield in 2020 with an offense that averaged 307.9 passing yards per game.

Memphis will need a new quarterback in 2021, with starter Brady White graduating after throwing for 10,949 yards and 92 touchdowns during a college career that included spending his freshman season at Arizona State.

It appears the Tigers could have another transfer from the Grand Canyon State to lead their offense in the year ahead.
