Inside the Box for
September 3, 2011: Diamondbacks 7, Giants 2
The Good:
Ian Kennedy showed, yet again, why he should be a candidate for the NL Cy Young award. Kennedy out-pitched Giants ace Tim Lincecum on Saturday, giving up five runs in his seven innings. He also struck out five as he earned his 18th win of the season.
The D-backs offense was led by Paul “Bunyan” Goldschmidt, whose two hits and two RBI led the team. Aaron Hill seemed to have Lincecum figured out, as he had two hits. Overall, the D-backs’ seven runs — including six extra-base hits — were an impressive display against their NL West rivals.
The Bad:
The Diamondbacks had a double play turned against them, but that about did it for the negatives. They played an excellent game and demonstrated why they have a solid lead over the Giants in the NL West.
The Funky:
Catcher Miguel Montero extended his current hit streak to 12 games.
