NFL Mock Draft Tracker Week 2: A cornerback for the Cardinals?

We’re into Week 2 of this year’s Arizona Sports NFL Mock Draft Tracker, and the trend that started in Week 1 continues.

The trend? Cornerbacks being linked to the Arizona Cardinals with the 16th overall pick of the first round.

It’s not surprising that this is going on, with veteran CB Patrick Peterson poised to hit free agency after 10 years in the desert with Arizona. The fact that Peterson is hitting the market doesn’t necessarily mean the 2011 first-round pick won’t be back; the Cardinals could always re-sign him. But general manager Steve Keim shouldn’t be swayed by the possibility Peterson is back, either. The position, as a whole, needs to be improved and there are many solid prospects that figure to be available at #16.

For the second straight week, South Carolina CB Jaycee Horn (you can read more about him here) is the most common link to Arizona — he shows up in four of the 16 new mocks added to the grid this week. But he’s not the only positional link to the Cardinals. Caleb Farley of Virginia Tech (2), Patrick Surtain II of Alabama (2), Georgia’s Tyson Campbell (1) and Eric Stokes (1) also appear as the pick for the Cards in the first round this week.

Cornerbacks made up 56.3 percent of the projections to Arizona this week.

Overall, with 32 mocks tracked, Horn (8) remains the most popular pick for the Cardinals, followed by Florida tight end Kyle Pitts (5), Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (3) and USC offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker (3).
