In 2021, there will be a new Pac-12 commissioner for the first time in more than a decade.

Larry Scott, who has been the conference’s commissioner since 2009, will leave his role on June 30, according to a Pac-12 press release.

A national search will commence immediately to replace Scott as the conference’s commissioner.

The Conference and Scott decided it was time for new leadership after his 11-year tenure. Scott’s existing contract is scheduled to expire in June 2022 and it was agreed he will remain in the role until June 30, 2021 to assist in the transition.

Scott replaced longtime conference commissioner Tom Hansen in 2009.

The former chairman and CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association oversaw the conference’s expansion to 12 teams in 2010, adding Colorado and Utah.

Scott came under fire repeatedly from fans and administrators alike during his tenure, particularly for the way his administration handled the roll out of the Pac-12 Network and the conference’s lack of appearances in marquee events, like the College Football Playoff.

Scott laid out the reasons why he decided to part ways with the conference, saying he is looking to take on other opportunities outside of his current role.

I was in pro sports for 20 years, I’ve now been in college athletics for more than 10 years, and now is a great time in my life to pursue other exciting opportunities. This moment, when college athletics are moving in a new direction and with the Conference soon commencing the next round of media negotiations, it seems the right time to make a change. It is important that the conference be able to put in place the person who will negotiate and carry out that next agreement. Based on the recent robust valuation and marketplace interest we’ve received from traditional and nontraditional media organizations, I am confident the conference is well-positioned for continued success. I appreciate the support of the Pac-12 member institutions and a very talented staff, with whom it has been my privilege to work.

ASU president Michael Crow addressed Scott’s decision in a statement on Wednesday night, wishing Scott well in his future endeavors.

“Larry Scott has done a great job bringing the Pac 12 into the 21st Century and has built a great foundation for taking the conference forward. We wish Larry all the best in his next ventures,” Crow’s statement said.

The search for Scott’s replacement will be led by the conference’s executive committee, which includes several campus presidents.
