Cardinals re-sign LB Clark Haggans

Jun 5, 2012, 3:57 PM | Updated: 9:30 pm

The Cardinals announced Tuesday they have re-signed
veteran
linebacker Clark Haggans to a one-year contract, according
to a release from the team.

“I’m just excited to be back running around with the boys,
and just sweating and getting sunburned,” Haggans joked.
“I’m very fortunate, very happy, and back at work.”

Haggans, 35, started all 16 games for the Cardinals last
season, registering 54 tackles, three sacks, three passes
defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

For his career, the former Colorado State product has
tallied 495 tackles, 46.5 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, five
fumble recoveries, one interception and 25 passes
defensed.

“I think that he brings a known quantity to the team, and
he’s a hard worker,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said
of Haggans. “I think he sets a good example for the young
players.

“He knows the defense; it’s good to have those kind of
guys back, competing.”

Haggans figures to take on more of a leadership role this
season, helping young linebackers like Sam Acho and
O’Brien Schofield, both of whom the team is going to rely
on heavily this season.

“It’s a flattering thing, kind of makes you feel old in a
way, but there’s no rocking chair in front of my locker
yet,” Haggans said of his role. “So, just take it and roll
with it.”

Haggans joined the Cardinals in 2008 following eight
seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The team released linebacker Broderick Binns to make room
for Haggans.
