Game 5 brings back good memories for D-backs

Game 5 sound familiar?

For Diamondbacks fans, Game 5 against the Milwaukee
Brewers could bring up some old memories. Ten year old
memories, to be exact.

The last time the Diamondbacks played a Game 5 in the
National League Division Series came in 2001, when they
went on to win the World Series.

That game in 2001 was against the St. Louis Cardinals in
Arizona. Curt Schilling pitched a one-run, six-hit
complete game. On any other night, Cardinals pitcher Matt
Morris’ one run, eight inning performance might have been
enough to earn a win, but not this time.

Offense was at a premium.

Reggie Sanders’ home run in the bottom of the fourth gave
the D-backs a 1-0, but that was erased a short time later
when J.D. Drew tied it up in the top of the eighth with a
solo shot off Schilling.

The game went into the bottom of the ninth inning knotted
up at 1-1, but with two-outs and two strikes, Tony Womack
singled in pinch-runner Danny Bautista to win the game.

Womack led the team with three hits in the game and the
Diamondbacks shut down National League Rookie of the Year
Albert Pujols, who went 0-4.

Another big name from that Cardinals roster was Mark
McGwire, who went 0-3 and hit .091 overall in the series.

The Diamondbacks own home run hitter, Luis Gonzalez, went
2-4 in Game 5 and hit one home run in the series.

The Diamondbacks went on to defeat the Atlanta Braves in
the NLCS and then the memorable seven-game series against
the New York Yankees for the franchise’s first World
Series title.
