Towers believes D-backs roster will remain mostly intact

PHOENIX – After the Arizona Diamondbacks digest that their season is over, the focus will then shift to what needs to be done for next year.

General manager Kevin Towers believes only slight changes need to be made.

“We really don’t have a lot of holes. Most of this team will probably be back next year and I think we’ll be better because of it,” said Towers on the Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf show Tuesday.

The D-backs’ GM said it was hard to lose in the postseason, but believes Arizona has the right team chemistry in place.

“It felt like one of those high school feelings where your girlfriend breaks up with you. It was tough to take, but it was very enjoyable. They played their hearts out.”

“We didn’t have any fights. The guys got along really well and believed in themselves. If anything, it was great experience,” said Towers.

Starting pitcher Joe Saunders, who is arbitration eligible, and unrestricted free agent second baseman Aaron Hill are the biggest question marks the front office will have to figure out.

Towers hinted it will depend on whether younger players in the system are ready in deciding if the veterans return or not, but stressed that finances won’t play a factor in the decision.

“We have the flexibility on our payroll to keep both of them if we want,” said Towers.
