The Arizona Diamondbacks roster shuffling began on Thursday
by granting right-handed relief pitcher Juan Gutierrez his
unconditional release.
Gutierrez was acquired by the Diamondbacks in December 2007
in the trade with Houston that sent closer Jose Valverde to
the Astros.
Though mostly a setup man during his time in Arizona,
Gutierrez held down the closer’s role for parts of the
forgettable 2009 and 2010 seasons, converting 24 out of 27
save opportunities.
Gutierrez missed most of the 2011 season with a right
shoulder injury. He last pitched on May 24th in a 12-4 loss
at Colorado. A day later, he was placed on the disabled
list.
The Venezuelan right hander pitched in 143 games for the
Diamondbacks over four seasons, posting a record of 4-9 with
a 4.62
ERA.
