Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed has joined forces with athletes across sports to aid families suffering from the food crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Ahmed and his wife, Amanda, are working with more than 40 athletes in support of Compassion International’s Fill The Stadium Initiative.

The campaign allows fans to partner with athletes by donating $500, the average price of what it would cost four fans to attend a sporting event.

The donation helps provide children and families with life-saving food and care to survive the pandemic-caused crisis.

Compassion International has raised over $11 million dollars so far. The goal is to fill a 70,000-seat virtual stadium, the average amount at a pro football stadium. As of Monday, the initiative has filled 22,000 seats.

“The need to help these children has only intensified in light of the pandemic,” Ahmed said in a press release Monday. “While we’ve missed having fans at our games, our hope is that those in more fortunate situations will join our team to help provide basic needs to children and their families across the world.”

Ahmed joins former Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer, signal callers Nick Foles and Kirk Cousins, Devin and Jason McCourty of the New England Patriots, Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher of the U.S. Women’s national soccer team, among others.
