Is new Diamondback Cahill a Webb clone?

Dec 13, 2011, 11:48 PM | Updated: 11:51 pm

Nobody is saying new D-back Trevor Cahill is the next
Brandon Webb.

Because, after all, that would mean the 23-year-old starts
199 games for his new team, posting a record of 87-62 with
a 3.27 ERA. Oh, and a Cy Young award, too.

However, the right-hander is drawing comparisons to the
former D-backs ace because they do have at least one
prominent thing in common:

A devastating sinker.

“We throw similar,” Cahill told Arizona Sports 620’s Burns
and Gambo. “Mostly sinkers with a changeup, a breaking
ball just to keep them off balance.”

Webb was one of the NL’s best over a four-year stretch,
though the D-backs only reached the postseason one time.
Injuries derailed and likely ended Webb’s career, though
you cannot argue with the results when he was on the
mound.

That’s why, in the end, Cahill looks at any Webb
comparisons as a compliment.

“Watching him a little bit, he had, obviously, the great
sinker,” he said. “I wish I could compare myself to him,
but he was Cy Young, a great pitcher for a long time.

“If I get compared to him it’s usually a good thing.”

Cahill has yet to make a start for the Diamondbacks, but
has a career record of 40-35 with a 3.91 ERA, though he
was at his best in 2010 when he won 18 games and had a
2.97 ERA.

Brandon Webb finished second in the NL Cy Young voting in
2007 with 18 wins and a 3.01 ERA.

Just saying.
