D-backs’ Gibson open to being ‘mic’d up’

Diamondbacks fans are going to get an exclusive, inside look into what the players hear and what’s on their minds throughout an entire baseball game.

MLB Network announced that they would televise the D-backs Cactus League game against the Indians on Wednesday, March 7 at Salt River Fields. A group of players and coaches, as many as six for each team, will be mic’d up for the contest, giving their thoughts on what is said and heard on the field and in the dugout.

For D-backs manager Kirk Gibson, he has mixed feelings over the microphone experiment.

“I’ve been involved in many confidential programs so to say, only to realize that they are not confidential at all,” Gibson explained. “Things are said during a game that if they got out somewhere it could be a disadvantage to any of us — that would be my biggest worry.”

Still, Gibson understands what Major League Baseball is trying to accomplish with the live-mic’d broadcast.

“I think I am open-minded to it,” Gibson said. “You listen to the concept, they are trying to let the real sounds of the game tell the story instead of just having a play-by-play and an analyst.”

While he would rather not participate, he’s going to be a good sport about it.

“I’d prefer not to be mic’d,” Gibson stated. “But I’ll do my part.”
