D-backs pitcher to miss Friday start

Mar 7, 2012, 9:07 PM | Updated: 9:10 pm

Josh Collmenter, the possible 5th starter for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, will miss his scheduled start on Friday against the Mariners due to forearm tightness in his throwing arm.

D-backs manager Kirk Gibson discussed Collmenter’s forearm with reporters today prior to the start of the team’s game with the Indians. “[Collmenter] is going to throw his bullpen instead of pitch in the game,” Gibson said. “It’s nothing that serious. We just air on the side of caution early in spring training.”

Gibson said that Collmenter doesn’t feel the tightness in his forearm when he throws the ball, just when he bends his arm. Collmenter will remain day-to-day, but is fully participating in every aspect of spring training and is expected to make his next start.

Getting the start in Collmenter’s stead will be top pitching prospect Trevor Bauer. Bauer looked impressive in his only start of the spring so far, he pitched two strong innings and had two strikeouts.

“[Bauer] has already started one for us and he did very well. He went six up, six down,” Gibson said when asked what to expect from Bauer. “He did it one time, let’s see if he can do it again.”
