D-backs’ Drew inching towards return

Mar 13, 2012, 4:35 PM | Updated: 5:48 pm

Stephen Drew has not played in a major league game since
breaking his right ankle on July 20, 2011.

Though he’s not expected to return by Opening Day this
season, he’s getting closer. Much closer.

“He had a really good day [Monday],” D-backs manager Kirk
Gibson said. “I think we’re going to push him pretty good
right now, this week. He seems to be recovering quicker, is
able to do more.

“We might ask him to do a couple new things this week.”

Still, Gibson cautioned that Drew still has a long way to go
before being ready to take the field again. After all, he
has not really run the bases much, situations that would
really test the ankle.

“Maybe we’ll try to get him in some live hitting, throw him
over on the minor league fields,” Gibson added.
