Four-star athlete Larry Turner-Gooden committed to the Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday, giving coach Herm Edwards’ staff the 57th-rated prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, according to 247 Sports’ composite rankings.

The 6-foot, 179-pound athlete is the fourth-highest rated recruit to ever land with the Sun Devils, per the website’s composite rankings that date back to 2000.

Only linebacker Vontaze Burfict (11th overall, 2009), tight end Zach Miller (25th, 2004) quarterback Jayden Daniels (35th, 2019) rated higher in history. Terrell Suggs, who was listed as an athlete, was rated 62nd in the 2000 class.

While Turner-Gooden was recruited to play safety at ASU, he is also a talented wide receiver who played at Calabasas High School and St. Bernard High School in Playa Del Rey, Calif.

“I like the defense and I see a great opportunity to get in and play right away,” Turner-Gooden told 247 Sports’ Greg Biggins before his commitment was announced. “They play a lot of three safety sets and they put you in position to make plays. They have shown they’ll play freshman and that’s definitely my goal coming in, to be an impact guy right away.”

Turner-Gooden told Biggins that defensive backs coach Chris Hawkins and newly added linebackers coach Chris Claiborne, his old high school coach at Calabasas, were key in the Sun Devils landing his commitment.

Turner-Gooden’s commitment spoke to ASU’s deep connections in Southern California, but it could impact the future recruiting success beyond that.

His announcement drew the attention of several 2022 recruits, including five-star receiver Tetairoa McMillan (18th overall) and four-star safety Xavier Nwankpa (72nd overall).
