Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Kole Calhoun will be out for four to six weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Calhoun had a partial medial meniscectomy performed on Wednesday.

“Hopefully a four-week recovery,” Calhoun said via Zoom on Thursday. “We’ll see how it goes. It’ll really be how this thing responds within the next couple of days swelling wise and the inflammation.

“I think it’s kind of up in the air, but I’m hoping worst-case scenario we’re looking at being back middle of April. I’m going to do the best I can to make that a little quicker.”

The Arizona native said he started feeling discomfort in the offseason but thought it was just a bone bruise.

But when the Diamondbacks started coming in for workouts, that’s when Calhoun began to notice that it wasn’t getting any better.

The 33-year-old admitted it’s going to be hard having to take it easy the first couple of weeks out.

Calhoun hopes that he can start building up to doing a little bit of baseball activity around the two-week mark so that he can be back closer to four weeks than in six.

“That’s my hope. That’s always the athlete’s hope,” he said. “But I believe the doctors might say a little differently. The most important thing is not trying to push this.

“It’s good that it’s happening now and not in April when I’m trying to play through this and now I’m missing six weeks with the team. … This thing just kind of lingered and the way I play, I wouldn’t be able to play through this.”
