D-backs’ Ketel Marte day-to-day after rolling left ankle vs. A’s

Mar 16, 2021, 5:40 PM

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — D-backs center fielder Ketel Marte kicked off the scoring Tuesday in the team’s 12-3 win over the Oakland A’s with a solo shot in the first inning.

He would add a run scored in the third inning after reaching on a fielding error.

But while he was navigating the bases, the center fielder suffered a rolled left ankle at third base.

He’s officially day-to-day with left ankle soreness.

“He’s good. … Once again, very similar to yesterday, it was my decision to remove him from the game,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “He played two games in a row.

“He was going to play potentially a couple more innings to get one more at-bat, but it just didn’t make sense to me to take that chance. Let the medical team get their hands on him, ice it down and he’ll be fine. He’s going to be fine.”

Tuesday’s rolled ankle marked the second straight day the outfielder has dealt with an injury of some sort. Marte exited Monday’s matchup with the Seattle Mariners after being hit in the foot by a pitch.

Entering play Tuesday, Marte was averaging .450 to go along with a .522 OBP. He recorded nine hits, including four doubles and a homer, four RBIs and two walks. He struck out three times.

The outfielder’s looking to improve on his 2020 numbers that saw him hit just two home runs over the course of 45 games. Marte also added 52 hits, 17 RBIs, a stolen base and seven walks. He averaged .287 and posted a .323 OBP.

Filling in for Marte in the outfield was Daulton Varsho. He recorded a walk and struck out once.
