Stephen Drew heading to Triple-A Reno for rehab

Jun 4, 2012, 11:51 PM | Updated: Jun 5, 2012, 1:13 am

The next step in Stephen Drew’s recovery is about to
commence.

Drew, who has not played this season after breaking an
ankle late last year, will be joining Triple-A Reno for a
minor league rehab assignment.

“With extended he’s afforded more latitude in preparing
for the game and in a game, now he’s going into games,” D-
backs manager Kirk Gibson said Monday. “He’s going to play
a game. He’s not going to lead off every inning, he can’t
be jogging down to the base. He’s going to be playing in a
competitive game.”

Drew can be on a rehab assignment for a maximum of 20 days
unless both he and the team agree to extend the stay,
meaning it’s possible — if all goes well — that Drew
could return to the D-backs by the end of the month.

But as of now, there is no timetable for how long the
shortstop will be in the minors.

“He’s had a substantial injury,” Gibson said, adding that
there is nothing that says Drew has to be in Reno for the
full 20 game stint.
