D-backs skipper maintains playoff goal, expectation

Perhaps Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers made some waves when
he
he said his team was going to
make
the playoffs.
After all, the D-backs are 7.5 games back of division-
leading Los Angeles and 3.5 out of the wild card race,
meaning if the postseason started today, they’d be
watching
from home.
But when asked about his boss’s comments before Friday’s
series opener against the Cubs, Diamondbacks manager Kirk
Gibson, ever the optimist, wasn’t shying away from Towers’
comments.
In fact, he echoed them.
“Couldn’t agree more,” he said when asked about the belief
in his team.
“We expect to, that’s what we push towards,” he said about
making the playoffs. “If some don’t believe us that’s
fine.”
Resisting the urge to make Derek Anderson “that’s fine” jokes, it’s worth
noting that the Diamondbacks are playing better baseball
of late, and could surpass the .500 mark for the first
time since May 4 with a weekend sweep of the Cubs.
But whether that happens or not, it appears the
Diamondbacks’ brass believes it has a team that is capable
of repeating last year’s postseason run.
Now they just have to go out and do it.
