Pederson, Dodgers slam De La Rosa, D-backs: By the Numbers

Rubby wasn’t able to deliver a gem in Los Angeles.

The Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher had a second inning to forget Friday, giving up a leadoff home run to the Dodgers’ Justin Turner and then a grand slam to Joc Pederson with one out in the frame.

Rubby De La Rosa would then retire the next 11 batters he faced, but the damage was already done when he left after five innings.

Arizona’s offense, meanwhile, was dead quiet. After exploding in a three-game home series against Colorado, the D-backs’ offense Friday reverted back to its form during last weekend’s series against Pittsburgh.

The D-backs only accumulated five hits on the evening, while Los Angeles reached home a few more times off Arizona’s bullpen.

The result was an 8-0 shutout for the home team. Carlos Frias made his first start of the season for the Dodgers, allowing only four hits and one walk in 5.1 innings while improving to 2-0.

Arizona lost for the first time in three games, falling to 10-12 overall, while the Dodgers improved to 14-8, the top record in the NFC West.

After Diamondbacks starters strung together nine straight quality starts, they have only had one such performance in the last three games — Josh Collmenter’s eight-inning outing against Colorado on Wednesday. The pitcher to end the streak was Jeremy Hellickson, who takes the mound Saturday in the second of the the three-game series. Scott Baker (0-1) is scheduled to start for Los Angeles.

The D-backs failed in a bid for their first three-game winning streak of the season. Three times they have won two games in a row this season, but they have yet to extend a streak longer than that.

Rookie third baseman Yasmany Tomas secured the first three-game hitting streak of his career by singling in his first at-bat Friday. He finished the game 1-for-4, his batting average dropping from .333 to .321, even with the one hit.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt had two of the Diamondbacks’ five hits, including his fifth double of the year — a ninth-inning liner to the right-center gap. The two-time All-Star is on a four-game hitting streak, with two or more hits in each of those contests; in total, he’s hitting 11-for-18 in that span. Goldy bumped his batting average up to .346 with his latest performance.

Relief pitcher Daniel Hudson had an up-and-down two innings after spelling De La Rosa. Hudson struck out four batters in the two frames, but he walked one and needed 40 pitches to get the six outs. In the first of the two frames, he allowed the Dodgers’ third home run of the night, a solo blast by Andre Ethier; it was the lone hit Hudson surrendered Friday. The 28-year-old right-hander has given up at least one run in four straight appearances, and his ERA sits at 6.75.

Coming off his best performance of the year, De La Rosa had one of his worst, allowing three hits (including two home runs), three walks and five earned runs while throwing 86 pitches. His 5.0 innings pitched marked a season low, and his record fell to 2-2. The 26-year-old right-hander did, however, strike out six and retire the last 11 batters he faced, but his ERA still jumped to 5.40 with the performance.

Friday’s result marks the second time the Diamondbacks have been shut out this season. Their other shutout loss was also an 8-0 decision, and it happened last Sunday at home against the Pirates. The D-backs have shut out two teams this season, and one was the Dodgers, which happened at Chase Field on April 10 — Archie Bradley’s major league debut.

Rookie reliever Enrique Burgos made his MLB debut Wednesday and reitred the side in order, but Friday’s appearance wasn’t so smooth. The 24-year-old Panamanian allowed two hits, two walks and two earned runs in the eighth inning. On the bright side, he struck out the first two batters of his career. However, the right-hander’s ERA climbed up to 9.00 with the performance.

If it weren’t for a couple of pinch-hit appearances over the past two-plus weeks, D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock could be on a 13-game hitting streak, or at least an 11-game run. In four at-bats Friday, the 27-year-old outfielder collected one of the D-backs’ five hits on the night. He’s had at least one hit in 11 of his last 13 games, and his batting average has rocketed from .250 to .320 in that span.
