Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened
in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look,
providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the
D-backs’ July 2 loss against San Diego. Final score: Padres 6, Diamondbacks
2
.

The Good

Aaron Hill extended his hitting streak at home to 17 games, tied for the fifth-longest in team history.

Chris Young hit his third home run in his last six games after going 29 games without a homer from April 17-June 23. As a team, the Diamondbacks have homered in 13 straight games. It’s their longest streak within a season since September 17-30, 1999.

The Bad

Diamondbacks pitchers allowed two home runs and issued six walks leading to the team’s four-game home winning streak coming to an end. Starter Trevor Cahill allowed two of the home runs and half of the walks. He has a 6.35 ERA (12 ER in 17 IP) since he pitched 7 shutout innings at the Angels three outings ago.

The Impressive

Padres catcher Yasmani Grandall’s first three hits have all been home runs. He’s the first Padre to accomplish that feat and the first player since St. Louis’ Keith McDonald in 2000.

Meanwhile, teammate Cameron Maybin’s 6th inning home run traveled 485 feet (source: ESPN Sports & Info Group), the longest in baseball this season and fourth-longest overall at Chase Field.

He said it

“He pitched okay but he made an important error. It cost
us two runs,” said manager Kirk Gibson of Cahill’s 6th
inning gaffe. Gibson’s club has committed an error in a
season-high six straight games. “Just fundamentally,
overall, tonight we did not play good at all. It was
overall a poor execution for us and it’s something that we
need to fix.”

Noted

On the two year anniversary of Gibson’s managerial debut,
the man he replaced, AJ Hinch, was in attendance up in the
pressbox watching from the visiting general manager’s
booth. Hinch is the assistant GM of the Padres, who have
now won three straight games.

Clayton Richard, who pitched 8.2 innings, is 4-1 with a
1.70 ERA (7 ER in 37 IP) in his last five starts. He’s 4-
0 in his last six starts vs. the Diamondbacks.

Coming up next

The Diamondbacks continue their series with the Padres
Tuesday with Trevor Bauer taking the mound against Andrew
Cashner (3-3, 3.63). For Bauer, it will be his Chase Field
home debut. He made his Major League debut June 28 at
Atlanta, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks with 3
strikeouts over 4.0 innings.
