Cody Bellinger hits home run, still ruled out after base-running goof

Ah, baseball. Always finding a way to be weird.
On Opening Day Thursday, we got reminded of that delightful fact of the game we love.
In the top of the third inning of a matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies, the Dodgers’ Justin Turner was on first base with his teammate Cody Bellinger up to bat.
Bellinger hit a drive to deep left-center field, where the Rockies’ Raimel Tapia had to leap in order to try and make the catch at the wall. He did not, and it was ruled a home run.
Almost everyone at Coors Field knew that, except Turner.

When Tapia extended himself to try and catch the ball, Turner was watching as he rounded second. He immediately stopped and turned around to sprint back to first in an effort (he believed) to stop himself from being doubled up.
What he wound up doing was crossing Bellinger’s path and going behind him. The first-base umpire was all over it, ruling Bellinger out since he advanced ahead of Turner. That’s the rule, despite Dodgers manager Dave Roberts’ objection.
Hey, at least they got one run out of it via Turner, who was the one that goofed. Whoops!
