As Jeopardy! host, Aaron Rodgers is coldly reminded of NFC title loss

Aaron Rodgers turned in his helmet and playbook for a suit and trivia prep, but in his first episode as a guest host of Jeopardy!, the Green Bay Packers quarterback got an unkind reminder of a painful loss taken during his full-time job.

Contestant Scott Shewfelt didn’t know a write-in answer to a question during the Final Jeopardy! round, but he used the opportunity to cook Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur for late-game decision-making in Green Bay’s 31-26 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last season’s NFC Championship Game.

“Who wanted to kick that field goal?” wrote Shewfelt, who wagered no money on the question.

If you don’t remember: The Packers had 2:05 left in the game and found themselves down 31-23 with a 4th-and-goal situation on the Bucs’ 8-yard line.

Instead of going for a touchdown and a two-point conversion that would have tied the game, LaFleur opted for a field goal.

Green Bay’s Mason Crosby nailed the 26-yard chipshot, but Rodgers and the offense then watched helplessly as Tampa Bay burned the final two minutes off the clock to win 31-26.

Safe to say, LaFleur’s decision was not a well-received one in the aftermath.

While the Packers reference in Monday’s episode of Jeopardy! was a zinger, Rodgers even more incredibly agreed with the contestant’s shot at his team’s decision-making.

“That is a great question. Should be correct,” the quarterback said after withholding his laughter. “Unfortunately for this game today, it’s incorrect.”

Rodgers told ESPN’s Rob Demovsky before his first Jeopardy! episode aired that, as host, he watched what Shewfelt was writing in real time before he read it aloud for the show.

“For about 25 seconds, I’m watching him write this, and he thinks about the answer and says ‘**** it,’ basically, ‘I’m going to write this answer,’ which, probably one of the viral moments of my two weeks will be his response, which is taking a shot at something that happened to us late in the season,” Rodgers said.

“But it was unbelievable as the host, I’m watching him and going, ‘I can’t believe I’m watching him write this.’ It was pretty amazing.”
