D-backs place reliever Chris Devenski on restricted list, call up Swarzak

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed pitcher Chris Devenski on the restricted list ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against the Colorado Rockies.

Manager Torey Lovullo said via Zoom that Devenski was placed on the list due to a personal issue, and could not provide further information on the move.

Devenski was an emerging closer candidate for the D-backs, especially after picking up the save in Sunday’s game against the San Diego Padres. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out one in the 3-1 win.

However, in Tuesday’s matchup against the Rockies, Devenski blew the save by giving up a game-tying home run in the ninth.

The non-roster invitee secured his spot in the Arizona bullpen after seven scoreless appearances (7.0 IP) in spring training. He allowed just four hits and three walks, while striking out seven. Opposing batters averaged .167 against the reliever.

Devenski spent the past five seasons with the Houston Astros. During that span, the righty was named an All-Star once (2017).

To fill Devenski’s spot on the active and 40-man rosters, the D-backs selected pitcher Anthony Swarzak from the alternate training site.

Swarzak, a 10-year veteran, appeared in five games for Arizona over the course of spring training. He allowed just one run on three hits, walked three and struck out three in five innings of work.
