Upton bests Delgado again as Padres down D-backs in 12: By the Numbers

Saturday’s matchup at Chase Field was a game of runs.

The San Diego Padres got to Arizona Diamondbacks starter Chase Anderson early, scoring the game’s first run via sacrifice fly.

Anderson was pretty dominant after that point, especially from the third inning on, and the Padres would not score again until the eighth inning after the D-backs starter had already exited.

Padres starter Tyson Ross kept Arizona hitless through his first 3.2 innings, but two hits were all the D-backs needed to drive in their first run of the night, and Anderson helped himself the following inning by recording his first major league RBI.

The visitors scored three runs in the eighth and the ninth, including the aforementioned two in the eighth, but Arizona rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch hitter Danny Dorn, a 30-year-old rookie, drove in the first two runs of his career to force a tie and, ultimately, extra innings.

Arizona failed to capitalize on a big opportunity in the bottom of the 10th, and the 4-4 tie was finally broken when former D-back Justin Upton hit a solo shot off Randall Delgado in the top of the 12th.

The Padres added another run in the 12th frame and held on for a 6-4 victory, their second in a row in the four-game series. The D-backs fell to 13-16 with the defeat, as San Diego improved to 17-15.

The two teams will face each other once more — early Sunday afternoon — at Chase Field before going their separate ways.

Here’s a look at Saturday’s back-and-forth, marathon game, by the numbers:

Anderson is still looking for his first win of the season despite posting four quality starts in six opportunities. Throwing 93 pitches in seven innings Saturday, the second-year right-hander struck out two and surrendered just five hits, two walks and one earned run, including no runs and just three hits after the first inning. Anderson (0-1) saw his ERA drop down to 2.97 with the performance. On offense, his fifth-inning single was just the second hit of his career, giving him his first RBI in the big leagues.

Dorn has primarily made a living in his rookie season as a pinch hitter, and his clutch double in the ninth was the first of his big league career, also giving him his first two runs batted in. The left-handed hitter’s batting average improved from .250 to .333 with the lone hit.

D-backs reliever Brad Ziegler had a rare off-night, although you could argue the Padres got lucky bounces on the two hits he allowed, both of which were doubles. The first double came off the bat of Yangervis Solarte, and it scored a run that was charged to Oliver Perez, who only pitched to one batter. The second double was by Derek Norris, and that scored Wil Myers, whom Ziegler had previously walked. In two-thirds of an inning of work, Ziegler was charged with two hits, one walk and one earned run, and his ERA went up to 1.35, as it was just the second game this season he’s allowed a run.

Upton has three home runs in six games against Arizona this season, including two late go-ahead solo shots off Delgado, whom he was traded for in January 2013. The Padres left fielder finished the night 2-for-6 with two RBI, one run scored and one strikeout. He’s hitting just 3-for-13 in the series so far with three RBI, two runs and two stolen bases. Delgado suffered his second loss of the season after going 2.2 innings with four hits and two earned runs allowed while striking out four.

Outfielder Ender Inciarte, who led off for the D-backs Saturday, has gone cold. He reached base via infield single in his final at-bat, but he finished the night 1-for-6. He’s hitting just 2-for-17 over his last four games with one double and four strikeouts, including three Saturday. However, the 24-year-old Venezuelan’s batting average is at a still-respectable .304.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt tied his career high by walking four times in the game, including once intentionally. In his other at-bats, he went 1-for-2 and scored a run. The only time he failed to get on base Saturday was a strikeout to end the game with Inciarte on second. Nonetheless, Goldschmidt has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, including the last four in a row.

Left fielder David Peralta drove in Goldschmidt for the D-backs’ first run of the evening. The liner skipped past Upton in left field and gave Peralta his first triple of the year; he had nine in 2014. The D-backs left-handed hitter finished the evening 2-for-5 with one RBI and one strikeout. He has a little hitting streak going of four games, with eight total hits in that span.

Despite entering in a non-save opportunity, D-backs closer Addison Reed pitched the ninth inning, just his second appearance since April 28. The right-hander had a rocky inning, allowing an earned run for the fourth time this season in nine appearances. He allowed two hits Saturday and struck out one, and his ERA inclined to 4.50 with the performance.

Myers has done major damage in the last two games. The Padres first baseman went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two runs scored in the latest victory, and he has gone 7-for-11 with three doubles, one home run, and three runs in the past two games, both San Diego wins.

Padres closer Craig Kimbrel had a streak going of 35 straight saves dating back to last June, but that ended as he struggled with his control in the ninth inning Saturday. Kimbrel walked one and gave up two hits, including Dorn’s two-run double. The Diamondbacks handed the closer his 20th career blown save as the two teams went into extra innings. The right-hander struck out two in his lone inning of work, seeing his ERA jump to 5.68.
