Diamondbacks can’t fend off Cardinals sweep: By the Numbers

May 27, 2015, 8:50 PM | Updated: May 28, 2015, 2:40 am

A walk-off throwing error ultimately pushed the Cardinals over the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-3 Wednesday night in St. Louis.

Wait, what?

Rewind a bit.

Several pieces fell into place to thwart the D-backs, who had a 3-2 lead heading into the ninth inning thanks to a two-run single from David Peralta (helped along by a throwing error by right fielder Jason Heyward).

First, catcher Tuffy Gosewisch was removed from the game in the sixth inning after jamming his left knee running to first. Backup Jordan Pacheco took his spot behind the plate.

Then, Heyward atoned for the run he’d given up earlier off his throwing error by hitting a solo home run off D-backs reliever Brad Ziegler in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, 3-3.

Ziegler went on to cede two hits and a walk to load up the bases, and faced Jhonny Peralta next, who was batting .500 against Arizona by the time he stepped up..

Peralta grounded to third, and the would-be winning run, Peter Bourjos, was thrown out at home but knocked into Pacheco while sliding for the tag.

Pacheco threw to first to attempt the double play, but overthrew, sending in Chris Carpenter to score on the error and end the series.

Here were the numbers:

1

Josh Collmenter’s first pitch of the game was knocked out of the park by Kolten Wong to give St. Louis an early 1-0 lead.

It was the ninth home run allowed by Collmenter this season — he gave up 18 in 2014.

Collmenter finished with two ceded runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings pitched.

2

D-backs outfielder Mark Trumbo hit his second home run of the series — it was a 425-foot solo shot to dead center in the fourth inning.

It was his sixth home run of the month and the first homer St. Louis pitcher Lance Lynn has given up to a right-handed hitter this season.

The D-backs have homered in a season-high six straight games, their longest streak since July 21-26, 2014 (five).

11

Yasmany Tomas has now recorded a hit in 11 straight games and entered the game leading all MLB rookies with a .349 average.

During Tomas’ streak, he has hit .447 with nine RBI and five doubles.

42

A.J. Pollock had another stolen base, upping the D-backs’ total to 42 on the season, which is tied with the Chicago Cubs for second in the National League.

9

The loss was Arizona’s third straight and ninth of last 10 against the Cardinals.
