A closer look: Montero, Miley lead D-backs past Reds

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ July 16 win over the Reds. Final
score: Diamondbacks 5, Reds 3.
The Good:
D-backs skipper Kirk Gibson changed up his struggling lineup, moving Justin Upton to the fifth spot, and it paid dividends for his club in their series-opener against the Reds.
The D-backs plated four runs without recording an out off Reds’ starter Bronson Arroyo (4-6) in the first inning.
Miguel Montero paced the D-backs’ offense, going 3-for-4 with a bases-loaded double, a solo home run and 4 RBIs on the night.
All-Star hurler Wade Miley notched his 10th win of the season, after withstanding a shaky start. The southpaw surrendered three runs and eight hits with six strike outs in 5 2/3 wins for the Diamondbacks.
J.J. Putz recorded his 17th save in 20 opportunities for Arizona.
The Bad:
D-backs’ first baseman Lyle Overbay wasn’t able to capitalize on the club’s offensive surge, going 0-for-5 on the night.
He Said It:
“We switched it around a little bit,” Gibson said about his line-up. “It was productive. Hopefully it stays that way for us.”
Noted:
An MRI revealed Reds’ first baseman Joey Votto will be sidelined for three to four weeks with torn cartilage in his left knee.
D-backs’ left fielder Jason Kubel missed his third straight game with a sore hamstring.
Coming up next:
The D-backs and Reds will face off in game two of their three-game set Tuesday at 4:10 p.m. Heralded rookie Trevor Bauer (1-1, 5.40) is set to oppose right-hander Johnny Cueto (10-5, 2.39).
