After winning medals as a player and team consultant for Team Canada in the past, Arizona Coyotes chief hockey development officer Shane Doan returns to the international stage this summer.

Doan was named an assistant general manager for the Canadian National Team on Tuesday as they prepare for the 2021 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship.

Doan and senior vice president of Canadian National Teams Scott Salmond will accompany newly appointed general manager Roberto Luongo in the player and staff selection process.

“We are also fortunate to have Shane and Scott contribute as assistant general managers,” chief executive officer of hockey Canada Tom Renney said in a press release. “Both individuals bring a wealth of experience to Canada’s National Men’s Team. Roberto, Shane and Scott bring a strong combination of NHL and international experience, both on and off the ice, and they will complement each other as we work towards building a team that can compete for a gold medal.”

After representing Canada eight times during his playing career, Doan worked with the Canadian National Team management group in 2019 when they won the Spengler Cup Championship. Doan was also a team consultant at the 2019 IIHF world championships, where Canada claimed a silver medal.

As teammates on the Canadian National Team, Doan and Luongo won the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. At the IIHF world championships, Doan and Luongo won a gold medal in 2003 and a silver in 2005.

The two were also teammates at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy where Team Canada placed seventh.
