Diamondbacks catcher Henry Blanco underwent successful surgery Wednesday to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.
The 40-year-old suffered the injury during an August 5th game against Philadelphia. The injury occurred when Phillies outfielder John Mayberry Jr. slid into Blanco’s glove on a close play at home plate. Blanco left immediately after being examined by a trainer.
Blanco is expected to miss the rest of the year following the procedure after appearing in 21 games for the D-backs. He hit .188 with one home run and seven RBI.
The Diamondbacks signed Blanco to a one-year, $1.2 million deal with a mutual option for the 2013 season. Known for his defensive prowess, he has played for nine MLB teams in his 15-year career.
