Gibson: Patrick Corbin made necessary adjustments in minors

The Arizona Diamondbacks face the Washington Nationals Sunday at Chase Field while trying to avoid a series sweep. They’ll look to left-hander Patrick Corbin to get them back on track.

Corbin has been solid since being recalled from Triple-A Reno and manager Kirk Gibson is happy with his adjustments.

“He’s just more comfortable. He understands the league, he understands his catchers better and what he has to do in any given situation,” Gibson said.

Gibson also praised Corbin’s poise and demeanor on the mound. He said the 23-year-old southpaw knew adjustments had to be made if he wanted to return to the big leagues.

“You come up and experience certain things, people can tell you but you have to make adjustments to survive,” Gibson said. “We’ve talked about this a lot.”

Corbin has been solid since his return going 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in his two starts. He allowed a combined two runs and six hits in his last 14 innings of work for the Diamondbacks.

So what is it that Corbin has changed so he can be successful up in the majors?

“He’s got to command the strike zone and he’s found his breaking ball,” Gibson said. “He works quickly and he’s always been athletic. He’s a great competitor.”

Gibson also reiterated Corbin likes to compete and he wants to be here. He doesn’t like to lose and he doesn’t want to fail.

We’ll see if Corbin can find a way to stay in the D-backs’ starting rotation the rest of the season.
