A closer look: Goldschmidt, Young hit back-to-back ninth inning HRs to shock Cardinals

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 16
win over the Cardinals.
Final
score: Diamondbacks 2, Cardinals 1.

The Good:

Paul Goldschmidt and Chris Young hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning off of Cardinals’ closer Jason Motte to propel the D-backs to a 2-1 win.

Arizona starter Trevor Cahill delivered a strong performance that likely would have went unnoticed if the D-backs had failed to come from behind and pull out a win in the series-finale against St. Louis.

The D-backs’ right-hander pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and a walk but was outshined by his counterpart Kyle Lohse.

The Bad:

Goldschmidt and Young’s heroics bailed out an offense that had compiled just four hits before the ninth inning.

He Said It:

“[Goldschmidt] came through huge for us and kind of took the pressure off of me,” D-backs’ center fielder Chris Young said. “At that point, it’s just go out and try to win the ballgame.”

Noted:

Thursday night was the eighth time in franchise history the D-backs hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth inning. It was also the third set of back-to-back jacks this season.

Coming up:

The D-backs head to Houston for a three-game series against the Astros that begins Friday. Rookie Wade Miley (12-8, 3.02) will take on Dallas Keuchel (1-4, 5.29).
