Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 17 win over the Astros. Final score: Diamondbacks 12, Astros 4.

The good:

When the fifth inning began the Diamondbacks were trailing 3-1. By the time the Astros collected three outs, they were leading 10-3.

The Diamondbacks nine runs were the most they’ve ever scored in a single inning, and included five hits as well as a three-run home run from Aaron Hill.

Chris Young went 4-for-5 on the night with one double and a home run in front of family and friends who were in attendance. Young was born in Houston, Texas.

The bad:

The Astros. Houston fired their manager Brad Mills and two coaches just hours after the loss. The ‘Stros are 39-82, the worst record in baseball.

Noted:

Ryan Wheeler hit his first career home run in the seventh inning of the game. Wheeler went 1-for-4 on the night with a walk. He is hitting .194 since being called up from Triple-A Reno.

He said it:

“A ton of energy, a lot of excitement (tonight). We know we can do this,” Ryan Wheeler told Fox Sports Arizona after the game. “I know we’re a few games back but there’s no doubt on our whole team that we can come back and make it to the playoffs.”

Coming up:

The Diamondbacks look to sweep the Astros Sunday morning when Ian Kennedy (10-10, 4.35 ERA) takes on former Diamondback pitcher Armando Galarraga (0-3, 5.75 ERA).
