The Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner and the Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. were named National League Co-Players of the Week, MLB announced Monday.
Bumgarner threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the late game of Arizona’s double-header against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. He struck out seven and didn’t allow a walk while retiring the final 17 batters he faced in what will ultimately not be logged as a no-hitter due to the shortened game length.
It’s Bumgarner’s second MLB Player of the Week award. He won his first in 2015 as a member of the San Francisco Giants.
The lefty’s outing gave Arizona a second win Sunday after fellow starting D-backs pitcher Zac Gallen cruised in a seven-inning shutout with one hit allowed. It was the first time a team allowed only one hit in any double-header, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
For San Diego, Tatis over seven games last week slashed .385/.467/1.000 with 10 hits, five home runs and seven RBIs last week. He also had four walks and four stolen bases.
Texas Rangers rookie outfielder Adolis Garciz earned the American League Player of the Week nod by going .333 with four home runs and nine RBIs last week over six games.
