Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 28 loss to the Reds. Final score: Reds 5, Diamondbacks 2.
The Good:
One of the only bright spots in the Diamondbacks loss to the Reds Tuesday night was the recovery of starting pitcher Wade Miley. Five of the first eight batters he faced reached base but he then retired 18 of his final 21.
The Bad:
The Diamondbacks slide continues. With the 5-2 loss Tuesday night to the Reds, Arizona is 4-12 in their last 16 home games and they are 2-7 so far on this current 10 game home stand and they’ve lost five straight five straight at home, which ties a season high for the third time.
The Diamondbacks own a 2-4 record against the Reds this season and they are now 2-11 against Cincinnati at home.
He Said It:
Catcher Miguel Montero gave his thoughts on starter Wade Miley battling through the long second inning.
“I told him he did a hell of a job because I thought he was going to last four innings after the first two innings. It’s not that he was throwing the ball bad, he just got a bunch of bloopers, great at-bat by Scott Rolen, battling and he got the walk. And then you just can’t see the results. It’s tough. He did a hell of a job.”
Noted:
The Diamondbacks offense is struggling mightily during this tough stretch. They’ve scored five runs or less in nine straight home games.
Another note, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was given the night off. That ends his streak of starting 34 straight games at first base. The last time he did not start at first was July 22nd against the Astros.
Up Next:
The Diamondbacks and the Reds play the series finale on Wednesday afternoon. Lefty Patrick Corbin will try to put a stop to the Dbacks skid and avoid the series sweep.
Corbin is 5-5 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. He’ll face Mat Latos for the Reds. Latos owns a 10-4 record and a 3.84 ERA.
