The Arizona Diamondbacks placed starting pitcher Merrill Kelly on the injured list Tuesday.
The length of Kelly’s stay on the list and the injury were not disclosed.
This season, Kelly is 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA and 1.469 WHIP over the course of six starts. Entering play Tuesday, he had the most innings pitched on the team (32.2).
Kelly joins Taylor Widener and Zac Gallen as D-backs starters to miss time due to injury this season.
With Kelly on the shelf, the D-backs reinstated Joakim Soria from the 10-day IL.
Soria, who traveled with the team to Miami, had pitched just 0.2 innings this season, walking two, before going down with a strained left calf.
Manager Torey Lovullo said Soria was “extremely close” to returning ahead of the team’s matchup with the Miami Marlins. The skipper said he needed to jump a few hurdles.
“We want to make sure that he’s 100% healthy and not going to take any steps backwards once he hits the ground running with us,” Lovullo said. “We need him at full strength and we need his health to continue for the rest of the year.”
Soria was an offseason addition the ballclub and whose name was thrown in as a potential closer option for the D-backs.
Pitcher Stefan Crichton currently leads in the team in the saves category with three. He’s sporting a 4.50 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. Chris Devenski is the only other D-back with a save.
