D-backs to drop Chase Field COVID-19 seating restrictions May 25

The Arizona Diamondbacks said Wednesday that Chase Field’s limited seating due to the coronavirus pandemic will be lifted starting May 25.

The D-backs announced that news while scheduling a release of single-game ticket sales of all remaining home games for May 17.

Tickets are already on sale for games up to May 17.

Arizona’s first set of home games that will go on sale spans Memorial Day weekend and includes: a May 25-26 series against the San Francisco Giants; a May 27-30 series against the St. Louis Cardinals; plus a May 31-June 2 matchup with the New York Mets.

Fans at Chase Field will still be required to wear masks after May 25, and the team is still “encouraging appropriate social distancing.”

“We continue to hear from our season ticket holders that they want to return to their original seats and we feel that they can do so safely,” D-backs president and CEO Derrick Hall said in a release. “While the seating restrictions will no longer be in place, we believe seat selection for the majority of games should still allow fans to spread out.

“We continue to work very hard to provide a safe and comfortable environment for fans and will monitor their feedback throughout the season.”

The Diamondbacks were expecting to allow 12,000 fans before the season but increased allowed capacity to 20,000 before Opening Day.

Average attendance through the team’s first three homestands as of Wednesday was 11,499, according to the team. That ranks 10th in Major League Baseball, though capacity numbers have varied by team.

Heading into Opening Day, the D-backs (42%), Rangers (100%), Rockies (43%) and Astros (50%) were the only teams with stadium capacity allowances above 33%.
