Two D-backs minor league squads in playoffs

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Triple-A team, the Reno Aces, lost their Pacific Coast League playoff matchup against the Sacramento River Cats at Raley Field on Thursday night.

Sacramento’s Jemile Weeks provided all the offense in the game with a solo home run in the third inning, leading his team to a 1-0 victory and bringing the series to a 1-1 tie.

Reno’s starting pitcher Daniel Cabrera took the loss surrendering just the one run on six hits through four innings. The Aces provided no offense scattering only four hits throughout the game and ending 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.

Sacramento starer Jesse Chavez retired the first 17 batters he faced before allowing his first base-runner with two outs in the sixth inning. He went on to allow four hits and one walk in his eight innings of work, but did not let a run cross a plate.

However the Diamondbacks’ other minor league team in playoff action Thursday night did not share the same misfortune. The Mobile BayBears, Arizona’s Double-A team, took game one of their Southern League first round playoff against the Montgomery Biscuits Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Led by Ollie Linton and David Nick, the BayBears took the 5-2 victory and the series lead. The two combined for four runs on five hits with Linton also saving two runs in the outfield with two spectacular catches.

Starting pitcher Chase Anderson struck out four of the first eight hitters he faced and led the pitching staff in holding the Biscuits to 3-for-18 with runners in scoring position. The Biscuits put at least one runner in scoring position in seven of the nine innings, including the tying run on second in the ninth, but ended the game stranding 12 runners on base and striking out 13 times.
