ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

A closer look: Matt Cain, Giants shutout D-backs

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ September 26 loss to the Giants. Final score: Giants 6, Diamondbacks 0.

The Good:

The D-backs couldn’t plate any runs against Giants ace Matt Cain but Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra managed to get two hits each off him.

The Bad:

Cain (16-5) was utterly dominant against D-backs hitters and managed to help himself at the plate Wednesday night.

The Giants right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits with one walk and six strikeouts to notch his career-best 16th win of the season.

Cain also had two hits and an RBI for San Francisco.

The D-backs only saw one runner get past second base in the loss.

Arizona starter Wade Miley matched his shortest outing of the season, lasting just four innings. He surrendered three runs with three walks and three punchouts.

Noted:

The D-backs suffered just their third loss in the past 10 games.

He Said It:

“We had opportunities in the fourth and in the seventh, both those innings, and he shut us right down,” D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said of Cain. “He’s good, he’s got great stuff, he sets guys up well, he has confidence to throw pitches that you haven’t seen in any situation.”

Up Next:

The D-backs and Giants will play the final game of their three-game set Thursday afternoon at 12:45 p.m. Left-hander Patrick Corbin (6-7, 4.36) gets the call for Arizona. He will be opposed by fellow southpaw Barry Zito (13-8, 4.18) for the Giants.
