Hold your horses, Cards contact Broncos about Orton

First it was Marc Bulger, then it was Kevin Kolb, and now it’s…Kyle Orton?

Thought to be available from the Denver Broncos, a new report is out saying the Cardinals inquired about Orton’s availability.

3TV Sports is reporting that the Cardinals have had preliminary talks with the Broncos in regards to the availability of QB Kyle Orton.less than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

Orton would make sense on a lot of levels for Arizona. Just 28, Orton is young enough to be a long-term answer at the position. Furthermore, Orton has improved in each of his five years in the NFL, with his most recent campaign being one where he threw for 3,653 yards and 20 touchdowns. His QB rating over five seasons is 79.6, and he’s thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in every season since his rookie year.

The trouble for Orton seems to be as much with his perception than his actual production. After all, why wouldn’t the Cardinals want a player whose QB rating has improved every year he’s been in the league and has thrown 71 career touchdowns against just 48 interceptions?

Of course, we don’t know if the Broncos are actually looking to deal the former Purdue Boilermaker, though with Tim Tebow on the roster and a likely rebuilding process underway they may look to go with the youngster and part with last year’s starter.

Orton reaching the market could only be a good thing for the Cardinals, as it would conceivably lower the cost of other quarterbacks as well as give Arizona another option — maybe even one of the better options — when searching for their next QB.
