D-backs suffer third straight sweep in Los Angeles Wednesday: By the Numbers

Talk about a lousy night for Valley area sports. Not only are the Arizona Coyotes on the brink of being homeless, but the Arizona Diamondbacks lost their ninth straight game — and third consecutive series — to the Dodgers in Los Angeles following Wednesday night’s 7-6 final.

Thanks to Howie Kendrick, who continued his stellar play versus the D-backs in this series, the Dodgers second baseman drove in the winning run with his walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

It was the D-backs’ fifth walk-off loss this season.

Opposed to Tuesday night’s 3-1 defeat, the D-backs received a lift from their offense Wednesday, while their pitching repeatedly failed them throughout the contest.

A.J. Pollock, Paul Goldschmidt and Yasmany Tomas would each go yard against Dodger pitching, but D-backs starter Jeremy Hellickson would only last 3.2 innings after surrendering six hits and five earned runs, including two homers.

The team will have Thursday off before traveling to San Francisco to take on the Giants Friday night.

Goldschmidt’s two-run home run in the fifth inning marked the 100th round-tripper of the first baseman’s career. With the home run, Goldschmidt also passed Matt Williams on the club’s all-time home run list.

Goldschmidt’s home run also registered as his 17th career home run versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was Goldschmidt’s 10th career home run inside Dodger Stadium.

After going 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI Wednesday in Los Angeles, Tomas recorded his 17th multi-hit game of the season. Tomas’ 17 multi-hit games leads all National League rookies.

Dodger Stadium has been a veritable house of horrors for the D-backs of late. Wednesday’s loss is the ninth consecutive defeat for Arizona when visiting Los Angeles.

Pollock tied a career-high when he belted his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot that drew the D-backs within a run in the ninth inning. Pollock has now hit safely in 18 of his last 21 games at a .398 clip (35-for-88) with eight doubles, two triples, five home runs, 13 RBI and 11 walks.

Though they were handed a stinging loss, the D-backs’ number two (Pollock), three (Goldschmidt) and four (Tomas) hitters in their lineup combined to go 9-for-15 with three home runs, five RBI and five runs scored.
