ASU baseball scores a run with the help from the home plate umpire

Jun 6, 2021, 2:27 PM | Updated: 2:56 pm

There are several ways to score runs in baseball whether its a home run, RBI base hit, a bases-loaded walk or in Arizona State’s case, a wild pitch landing in the umpire’s pocket.

On Sunday facing elimination against Fairfield University in the NCAA Tournament, the Sun Devils got the go-ahead run with a little help from the umpire.

In the top of the sixth inning, redshirt freshman Sean McLain was at the plate for the Sun Devils when a pitch got away from Fairfield’s catcher and the ball made its way into the home plate umpire’s front pocket.

The ball was considered a wild pitch and all base runners advanced, giving the Sun Devils a 7-6.

Many people were in disbelief with the play as they had never seen that before, let alone seeing a run get scored that way.

However, Fairfield would end up rallying late in the game to knock off the Sun Devils by a score of 9-7.
