Arizona Wildcats shortstop Kevin Newman was selected 19th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft Monday.
Newman is coming off a junior season in which he hit .370 with two home runs and 36 RBI. He also stole 22 bases en route to his third All-Pac-12 first-team selection.
With the selection, Newman becomes the first Wildcat to be selected in the draft’s first round since pitchers Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth were taken 21st and 26th, respectively, in 2008.
The shortstop is the first Arizona player to be selected in the top 20 since Trevor Crowe was taken 14th overall by the Cleveland Indians in 2005.
