De La Rosa dazzles in D-backs series-opening defeat of San Diego: By the Numbers

Here we are once again.

After earning the 4-2 victory over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field Friday night, the Arizona Diamondbacks are just one win away from bringing their overall winning percentage this season to .500. In their attempts to reach .500 so far this year, the D-backs are 0-8.

But gunning for .500 can wait, at least momentarily.

Friday was about defeating a divisional opponent — which the D-backs did for a fourth straight time — and continuing to flex their newfound muscle on the mound in the form of their starting pitching — moving to 6-2 in the last eight games.

Lasting seven innings versus the Padres, Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa surrendered five hits and allowed only one earned run, striking out six to improve his season record to 6-3 and extend his winning streak at Chase Field to four.

Offensively, the D-backs did well roughing up San Diego starter James Shields, scattering eight hits and four runs in handing the Padres’ ace his first loss of the season (7-1).

Below we take a look at the D-backs’ 33rd win of the season, by the numbers.

Another D-back win was punctuated by another strong performance by a member of the Arizona starting rotation. Thanks to De La Rosa’s seven-inning, five-hit, one-earned run, six-strikeout outing, D-backs starters are 6-2 with a 2.25 ERA over the last eight games.

With the win over the Padres, the D-backs have now won four straight against divisional opponents. The win for De La Rosa also improved his record at Chase Field to 4-0.

Pitching seven strong innings for the D-backs Friday night, De La Rosa extended his scoreless innings streak to 12.2 before the Padres picked up a run in the fifth inning following a bases loaded walk. The streak of 12.2 innings without a run allowed set a new career-high for the 26-year-old right-hander.

After going 2-for-3 with a double, one walk and one run scored against the Padres, D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock upped his career batting average versus San Diego to .311. In 33 career games versus the Padres, Pollock has recorded eight doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI. He also was responsible for the weirdest moment of the night when his first hit of the game got stuck in the outfield padding for a ground rule double.

Though he remained in the game after being hit in the elbow by a pitch from Padres starter James Shields in the first inning, Yasmany Tomas was later pulled from the contest in favor of Danny Dorn, who took over for the rookie in right field. In exiting the game, Tomas’ nine-game streak of recording a base hit in a home start was officially snapped. Before exiting the game, however, he would make the highlight reel with a terrific diving catch in right to get the out.
