The Arizona Diamondbacks signed free agent RHP Jake Faria ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In a corresponding move, the team designated infielder Ildemaro Vargas for assignment.
Faria spent this season with the Los Angeles Angels Triple-A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees, and was 3-2 with a 5.65 ERA before he was released on June 16.
The 27-year-old righty got his start with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2017 before he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 2019. Over three MLB seasons, Faria is 9-9 with a 4.54 ERA over 49 games played (26 starts).
Manager Torey Lovullo said pregame Saturday that Faria will pitch out of the bullpen.
Vargas was reacquired by the D-backs from the Pittsburgh Pirates for cash considerations on June 2. He previously played for the team from 2017-2020.
During his recent stint with Arizona, Vargas went 3-for-17 with three RBI and three strikeouts over nine games.
The D-backs will look to snap a 15-game losing streak Saturday against the Dodgers.
